98 Points - Philip Rich
Serrat is the family winery of Yabby Lake winemaker Tom Carson and partner Nadege Suné. Serrat has 8,800 vines per hectare - more than four times the average density, however their vines carry only a few bunches each. Remarkably, it takes one vine to produce each bottle of Serrat wine; these are genuine, hand-crafted wines of the highest quality.
Serrat Pinot Noir has gained a huge following and is always one of Australia's most sought-after Pinot Noir. The 2023 Serrat Pinot Noir is another sublime example; fragrant, with a silky mouthfeel and a palate packed vibrant red fruit flavours and lovely savoury undertones. As always, our very limited stocks will sell out fast.
"98 Points. A mix of MV6 and Pommard clones; 25% whole bunches, natural-yeast ferment, 12 days on skins. Matured in 500L French oak casks (33% new). A bright, medium crimson. Brooding and complex with its bouquet of wild strawberries, dark cherries, spices, rosebush and a little potpourri. Seamlessly textured and gently saline, the tannins are ripe, velvety and very persistent. Everything is in total harmony, and while it wouldn't be a crime to drink this now, its best is yet to come."- Philip Rich, winecompanion.com.au.
"This wine is from the original planting of MV6 Pinot Noir, plus a proportion of newer plantings of 848, MV6 and Pommard clone. We added about 30% whole bunch in the ferments in 2023, which has given the wine quite a punchy and fragrant aroma, that evolves nicely as the wine sits in the glass. It was aged in 500 litre French oak puncheons, on lees for 11 months. 25% new Tronçais oak. The bouquet is dominated by the darker cherry and a plummy hint coupled with red fruit spectrum, strawberry, raspberry, spice, cherry, with detailed fragrance and floral notes. The new clones are adding an extra level of extract and tannic concentration which is exciting, the palate is tightly wound but underneath a silky and voluminous mouthfeel. Serious extract and density. Best 2028-2040"- Serrat Wines.
