Riesling is not always the first white wine varietal that comes to mind when considering Shaw + Smith, however that could well change given the quality of this release.
Made from hand-picked grapes sourced from two high, cool-climate sites in the Adelaide Hills; the 2021 Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hills Riesling is an intense, textural and delicious Adelaide Hills Riesling. With wonderful fruit purity, this offers plenty of exotic fruits, citrus and orange blossom flavours, finishing with impressive length.
"94 Points Very pale, water-like appearance. The nose is very shy and reserved, very young and unevolved, with sotto voce whispers of lemon pith and lime peel. There is a dab of sweetness that appears early on the palate, which just softens the steeliness a fraction. It remains very delicate, subtle, pared-back and promising to produce more charms if given more time. Intensity and length are very good." - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 10 November, 2021.
Shaw and Smith Wines began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. Shaw and Smith had the clear vision to make exciting, refined wines exclusively from the Adelaide Hills.
Today the team at Shaw and Smith specialise in making Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Pinot Noir, all that rank amongst Australia's leading examples of their respective varieties.
Shaw and Smith's winery was built in time for the 2000 vintage. It houses a tasting room, offices and all winemaking facilities from fermentation to bottling. Shaw and Smith's environmentally sensitive winery is regarded as the benchmark for winery developments in the Adelaide Hills.
