Spinifex is the project of New Zealand-born Peter Schell, a Roseworthy graduate who had spent several vintages working in the south of France prior to establishing Spinifex. Given his time working in southern France, a focus on Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cinsault was a natural direction for Schell's winemaking.
Spinifex Rose is one of the leading examples of Australian Rosé and the 2020 vintage is again in fine form. Made from a blend of 65% Grenache, 10% Cinsault and 25% Mataro, this is packed with aromatic red berry, floral and grenadine fragrance, thirst-slaking freshness and terrific depth. An Australian benchmark, this is sure to appeal to the many fans this wine already has.
"94 Points. The two maestros of Barossa Rosato are Mark Bulman and Pete Schell. Maybe they should make one together one year? Imagine! This is Mataro, Grenache and Cinsault. Blush colour. Soft and powdery with a redcurrant and tangerine sort of flavour, plus a slight earthiness, spice and floral things. It’s glossy and fine at once, just the right amount of flavour, and a gentle herb laced finish of fine length and grip. Delightful. Tasted: Feb21 13% alc. $26 Screwcap Drink: 2021 - 2024" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
Spinifex is the project of New Zealand-born Peter Schell, a Roseworthy graduate who had spent several vintages working in the south of France prior to establishing Spinifex. Spinifex's focus is on producing regional wines from Mediterranean varieties - predominately reds, mainly Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz and Cinsault.
They aim to make wines that display signatures of vineyard provenance and vintage, show regional typicity, and have a consistent thread of 'house style' that reflect their preferences and experiences with wine.
Winemaking is simple and relatively non-interventional in approach. They are big believers in the primacy of the vineyard. Good sites with restricted yields and old vines picked at optimal maturity almost always deliver intense, textured wines of character. Current standouts in the range include their Indigene, Esprit, Bete Noir, La Maline, and Papillon, while great value is to be found under their Miette Range.
