Spinifex is the project of New Zealand-born Peter Schell, a Roseworthy graduate who had spent several vintages working in the south of France prior to establishing Spinifex. Given his time working in southern France, a focus on Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cinsault was a natural direction for Schell's winemaking.
Spinifex Rosé is one of the leading examples of Australian Rosé and the 2022 vintage is again in fine form. Made from a blend of Barossa Valley Grenache (52%), Mataro (30%), Shiraz (16%) and Cinsault (2%). The vines are all dry-grown and mainly bush vines with an average age of 50 years, although the oldest parcels reach up to 90 years of age. This is packed with aromatic red berry, floral and grenadine fragrance, thirst-slaking freshness and terrific depth. An Australian benchmark, this is sure to appeal to the many fans this wine already has.
"94 Points. Pete Schell makes a damn fine rosé. This year it's 52 /30 / 16/ 2% grenache/ mataro/ shiraz/ cinsault and it sits light salmon in the glass showing aromas of nectarine, raspberry and grapefruit along with hints of redcurrant jelly, white flowers, crushed stone and maybe a touch of lanolin. Sapid and fine with a lovely shimmering acid line and savoury palate shape and an endearing lipsmacking briny finish that begs another glass. $28. 12.5% alc. Drink by: 2026.
