97 Points - James Halliday
The 2019 Spinifex Barossa Syrah follows in the footsteps of previous vintages of this wine, which has proved hugely popular. Made from grapes grown in the higher, cooler sites of the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, this offers a more restrained rendition of Barossa Shiraz
Incredibly approachable and drinkable in its youth, this still manages to deliver loads of concentrated fruit flavours and impressive length. A wonderful value red wine from one of the Barossa's most acclaimed winemakers, our limited stocks are likely to go quickly.
”97 Points. The compelling complexity of the wine starts in the old vines, magnified by the whole bunch (40%) and whole berry (60%) fermentation: layer upon layer of blackberry essence accompanied by licorice, spices of all kinds and velvety tannins. Exceptional value. 14.5% alc, screwcap. Drink to 2044, $30”- James Halliday, The Weekend Australian, October 3-4, 2020.
Spinifex is the project of New Zealand-born Peter Schell, a Roseworthy graduate who had spent several vintages working in the south of France prior to establishing Spinifex. Spinifex's focus is on producing regional wines from Mediterranean varieties - predominately reds, mainly Mataro, Grenache, Shiraz and Cinsault.
They aim to make wines that display signatures of vineyard provenance and vintage, show regional typicity, and have a consistent thread of 'house style' that reflect their preferences and experiences with wine.
Winemaking is simple and relatively non-interventional in approach. They are big believers in the primacy of the vineyard. Good sites with restricted yields and old vines picked at optimal maturity almost always deliver intense, textured wines of character. Current standouts in the range include their Indigene, Esprit, Bete Noir, La Maline, and Papillon, while great value is to be found under their Miette Range.
