The 2019 Other Wine Co Pinot Noir is made from declassified fruit from the famed Tolpuddle vineyard in Coal River Valley. The grapes were hand harvested and then fermented in a combination of stainless steel, oak and concrete. Ferments were made up of around 50% whole bunches and 50% de-stemmed whole berries. The whole bunches contribute to its aromatic intensity and a spicy flavour profile.
With only a short period of maturation in barrel, this is an aromatic and a lip-smackingly delicious Tasmanian Pinot Noir with plenty of vibrant varietal fruit flavours, bright acidity and some attractive savoury undertones. Ready to be enjoyed now, this is high quality Pinot drinking at a very reasonable price.
"Scents of kirsch and clove. Similar flavours, quite diffuse, there’s a hit of twiggy tannin, a little breathy warmth in the mix. It’s pushing towards dry red but also shows that slight muscularity of fuller figured Tasmanian pinot noirs. Nice chew through the wine, firm fruit character, a bit of sweet-cherry mouth perfume, a dry, dusty finish. Has good weight and agenda as a Tasmanian pinot, maybe just missing a touch of finesse. That being said, an overt pinot for lovers of the style is here. 91 Points 13.5% alc. $35 Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2025"- Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.
Tolpuddle Vineyard in the Coal River Valley region of Southern Tasmania was established in 1988; taking its name from the Tolpuddle Martyrs; English convicts transported to Tasmania for forming an agricultural union.
Martin Shaw, Michael Hill Smith MW and Matthew Hill Smith purchased the vineyard in 2011 with a vision of making Tolpuddle one of Australia's great single vineyards. The vineyard is planted with mature vines, the cool and dry climate ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of exceptional quality.
Today Tolpuddle are producing some of Australia's leading examples of these Burgundian varieties. Made in very small quantities, the Tolpuddle Pinot Noir and Tolpuddle Chardonnay are highly sought after by lovers of premium Australian wine.
