95 Points - Huon Hooke
Torbreck continues to take advantage of dry-grown, old vines to make some of the Barossa's most demanded wines. Torbreck's The Gask Shiraz is crafted from grapes grown in the cooler climate, higher altitude vineyards of Eden Valley. These elevated sites yield small, intense berries that possess great intensity of flavour without sacrificing balance and poise. Heroic in style, it still retains the cooler edge and tighter structure that make the great wines from Eden Valley famous.
Soft and elegant the 2018 Torbreck The Gask offers up aromas of plum and eucalypt, whilst concentrated fruit gives the wine an inklike hue. The generous palate displays notes of freshly crushed blackberry and graphite, giving way to a tightly wound tannin profile. Aged in seasoned French oak barriques this is a wine to appreciate now but will also benefit from 5 to 10 years in the cellar.
"95 Points. Deep, bold purple/red colour, with a lifted perfume typical of Eden Valley, complete with raspberry fruit - a matter of red rather than black fruits. It’s intense and fruit-sweet, lush and rounded, with stacks of flavour but not especially big, nor very tannic. A delightfully lush wine, and classic Eden Valley" - Huon Hooke, The Real Review.
David Powell established the iconic Torbreck in 1994 by offering to nurse back to health a number of neglected old vines he had found when he was working for Rockford.
This share-crop arrangement allowed Powell to make his first wine under the Torbreck label which was named after a forest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. The Torbreck wines are based on the classic Barossa varieties of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and also small quantities of Roussanne, Marsanne & Viognier.
Torbreck has an enviable collection of growers around the Barossa & Eden Valleys with vines aged from 10 years old (which would go into Woodcutters Shiraz) to 160 years old (The Run Rig). The house style at Torbreck is a seamless balance of richness and finesse, the wines are always fresh and vibrant with underlying power and drive.
These are world class red wines and a benchmark for the Barossa Valley.
