Torbreck continues to take advantage of dry-grown, old vines to make some of the Barossa's most demanded wines. Like all Torbreck wines, Woodcutter's Shiraz is sourced from hand harvested and hand tended, low yielding vines. It is then open fermented and gently basket pressed, and aged on fine lees for 12 months in large format seasoned barrels and foudres.
Full of freshness and bright youthful fruits, the 2019 Torbreck Woodcutters Shiraz opens up with aromatic plum and raspberries that leap out of the glass. The wine has a round central core of red fruit that gives way to a complex mid-palate full of cassis, dark cherry, spice and vanilla. While offering immense pleasure in its youth, the 2019 Woodcutter’s Shiraz will certainly develop into an impressive wine with a few more years in the cellar. David Powell established the iconic Torbreck in 1994 by offering to nurse back to health a number of neglected old vines he had found when he was working for Rockford.
This share-crop arrangement allowed Powell to make his first wine under the Torbreck label which was named after a forest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. The Torbreck wines are based on the classic Barossa varieties of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and also small quantities of Roussanne, Marsanne & Viognier.
Torbreck has an enviable collection of growers around the Barossa & Eden Valleys with vines aged from 10 years old (which would go into Woodcutters Shiraz) to 160 years old (The Run Rig). The house style at Torbreck is a seamless balance of richness and finesse, the wines are always fresh and vibrant with underlying power and drive.
These are world class red wines and a benchmark for the Barossa Valley.
