The 2018 Schist Rock Shiraz delivers everything that's made previous vintages so popular; vibrant juicy black fruit and chocolate flavours, subtle quality French oak influence, and the seemingly perfect balance between power and approachability. Another crowd-pleasing Schist Rock Shiraz that offers super value Barossa Shiraz drinking at this price.
"93 Points. This wine comes in at under $20 if you shop around. That’s incredible value. Dom Torzi sets a modest price, but is invariably confident about the quality of his wines. Bright blueberry and blackberry, plenty of pepper and spice, potpourri perfume. It’s medium bodied, sleek and dark cherry juicy, super fine tannin, some meaty and nutty flavours, gentle stony tannin pulling along the finish. Tasted: Aug19 Alcohol: 14.5% $25 Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2028+" - Gary Walsh, The WIne Front.
"The second label to the glorious ’18 Frost Dodger and is basically the non dried fruit portion and aged in ex-Frost Dodger barrels. What a $25 wine it is too. Fennel, dark chocolate and dark berries with a little mint. Maybe a bit more diffuse than the top dog (which has the added complexity of air-dried fruit), but this is plush fruited and generous with a liberal dose of spice and light tannins. Modern Barossa in a good way. You could pay $40 a bottle and get less wine. Best drinking: now to ten years. 17.7/20, 92/100. 14.5%, $25. Would I buy it? Absolutely." - Andrew Graham, www.ozwinereview.com.
Torzi Matthews is a food and winemaking partnership between Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews. Both share a passion and the firm conviction of appreciating the value of heritage tradition in the crafting of their wines and olive produce. In 1996 they stumbled across a small, frost-pocketed hollow in the beautiful Mt McKenzie, Eden Valley and fell in love with the area for its remoteness and its diverse thin soils.
The rationale was quite simple: this land would produce low yields of fruit which in turn would translate into flavoursome European style wines - the style of wines needed to match their Mediterranean food. Torzi Matthews also produces wines under the Vigna Cantina label that introduces their Italian family native varietals and those outside the Italian wares that they seek interest to explore.
The wines of Torzi Matthews are truly wonderful in their aromatics and fresh lively fruit flavours, with their Schist Rock Shiraz and Frost Dodger Shiraz becoming perennial favourites of ours, while their Frost Dodger Riesling is always a stunning example of Eden Valley Shiraz.
