96 Points - Ray Jordan
With a history dating back to 1894, Wirra Wirra is a family-owned icon situated in the heart of South Australia's McLaren Vale wine region. Wirra Wirra's 'The Angelus' is reserved for exceptional parcels of cabernet sauvignon released each vintage to showcase the best of McLaren Vale.
The 2021 Wirra Wirra 'The Angelus' Cabernet Sauvignon opens with intense aromas of blackcurrant, dark plum, redcurrants, thyme and cloves. The palate displays wonderful structure with dark fruit and coffee flavours, dried herb notes and a restrained coil of tannin leading to a long finish. Another beautiful example of McLaren Vale Cabernet with long-term cellaring potential.
"96 Points. No, the name doesn’t come from the famous St Emilion winery but from the old Angelus Bell that was salvaged from a Jesuit church in Adelaide. An elegant and stylish medium-bodied Cabernet that shows what McLaren Vale can achieve in very good seasons. Intense chalky blackcurrant fruit aromas with a trace of dark chocolate and black olive. The palate is so beautifully integrated with fine tannins and beautifully managed oak cradling the fruit through to its extended finish. Drink: 2024 - 2044."- Ray Jordan, winepilot.com.
"95 Points. All French oak (30% new). From a cool year, a typical windfall for McLaren Vale cabernet, this is refined and elegant, oak neatly packed into the relatively sleek frame, an impressively refined complement of tannins stretching seamlessly from front to back. This is polished, without feeling fussed over, classic notes of cassis, currant, mulberry and cedar et al. with nori, graphite and iodine, and all caught in a tight embrace, nothing spilling out, no excess or sweetness but plenty of concentration and drive. It all bodes well for a long future in the cellar. An excellent release. 14% alc. Drink: 2024 - 2036"- Marcus Ellis, winecompanion.com.au.
