95 Points - Dave Brookes
Acclaimed Mornington Peninsula-based Yabby Lake embarked on an exciting new chapter in 2022, when they purchased a vineyard site in Tasmania's Coal River Valley. Continuing their long-held objective of crafting single vineyard wines of great purity and character, their Coal River Chardonnay and Pinot Noir releases have already attracted a huge following.
The 2024 Yabby Lake Tasmania Coal River Pinot Noir opens with enticing perfumed aromas of wild strawberries, dark red cherries, and dried rose petals, accompanied by subtle savoury and spicy lift. On the palate, it reveals a medium-bodied, silky profile packed with bright red berry fruit and dark plum flavours. Silken, fine-grained tannins and vibrant natural acidity frame the palate beautifully, leading to a long, persistent finish marked by earthy complexity and a mineral lift.
"95 Points. A super Coal River pinot noir from Tom Carson; 8% whole bunch. Dark cherry and red plum fruits cut with hints of struck flint, medina spice, poached rhubarb, dried shiitake, mountain herbs, leaf litter, oak spice, Chinese barbecue joint and earth. Nicely composed with a liminal twiggy glance, pure, spicy fruit flow, fine river-silt tannins and that vivid saline acid drive that the southern isle does so well."- Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion.
"95 Points. Brilliantly bright fresh purple-red colour is medium depth, the aromas vegetal and plummy, a hint of green olive, a suggestion of whole-berry fermentation. The wine is quite firm to finish giving it serious structure that bodes well for its future. Excellent concentration of dark cherry flavour and medium-full body. A wine of depth, structure and potential."- Huon Hooke, The Real Review.
