95 Points - Campbell Mattinson
Yalumba has had a long commitment to Viognier, with their flagship The Virgilius now standing as Australia's finest example. Another beautifully aromatic white, the 2022 Yalumba The Virgilius has loads of lifted white flowers, fresh apricot, ginger and spice on the nose.
Once again the trademark Viognier texture of the palate is clearly evident in this wine; incredibly complex with fruit purity and restraint that slowly opens with time in the glass. The Virgilius, while showing all the virtues of great Viognier as a young wine, will reward cellaring as it evolves in the bottle, with even more layers of flavours and aroma.
"95 Points. I’ve set the drinking window at 2026- because this is coiled, tight and reserved, and will be so much better for the run of time. But you could of course drink this now and thoroughly enjoy the experience. It tastes of crushed fennel, apricot nectar, stones, steel, citrus and a spray of more savoury inputs, though the net impact is great than the sum of its parts. It shows great power, great restraint and great promise. Tasted: Apr24. 13.5% alc. Screwcap Drink: 2026 - 2031+"- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
