98 Points | Grenache of the Year - 2027 Halliday Wine Companion
Yangarra’s combination of ancient geology, high altitude and Mediterranean climate provide the ideal growing conditions for the best grape varieties of the southern Rhône. Sourced exclusively from 13.3 hectares of un-irrigated bush vines planted in 1946, Yangarra's Old Vine Grenache is consistently outstanding.
Yangarra Ovitelli Grenache is the most perfumed and elegant Grenache from the sands at Yangarra. The vibrant fruit of those dry grown 1946 bush vines is rewarded with a long, luxurious ferment and a whole autumn on skins in big ceramic eggs. The 2024 Yangarra Ovitelli Grenache was named Grenache of the Year in the 2027 Halliday Wine Companion, drawing a glowing 98 point review from Marcus Ellis. A spectacular McLaren Vale Grenache in high demand, our limited stocks will go quickly.
"98 Points. 2027 Grenache of the Year. From Block 30, planted in 1946 by Frederick Smart and his son Bernard, barely in his teens. All in 675L ceramic eggs with four months on skins. The '23s were pale, elegant and riveting. The '24 season was warmer, but the lineage of elegance and medium-bodied finesse continues. This is up there with the best Ovitellis, so fragrant and savoury, so much more enchanting on day two, and even more on days three and four. Dried cranberry and red cherry, pomegranate, dehydrated and ground orange peel, pressed and fresh wildflowers. The nose is mesmerising, swirling with rose, musk, wild fennel and medina spice, heady with exotica. Transparent, nothing heavy or sweet, just such poise, such harmony, nothing out of place, yet nothing forced or over polished. The tannins are fine, chewy and layered, the length spectacular. 14% alc. Drink: 2026 - 2036"- Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion.
