"Breathtaking" | 98 Points - Tyson Stelzer
Dry Red No 1 is Yarra Yering's Cabernet blend, or as the winery describes it, "a classic claret-style", this 2018 Yarra Yering Dry Red No 1 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon 55%, Merlot 28%, Malbec 12%, Petit Verdot 5%.
This is an incredibly elegant, medium-bodied wine; the palate shows power and restraint at the same time, the iron fist in a velvet glove. Beautiful fruit, a bright acid drive and tannins that form a solid foundation for the long future. Brooding but not intimidating, this will be exciting to watch evolve.
“98 Points. This blend of Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot has rightfully gone down in Yarra folklore over the past 51 years, a beacon and inspiration for what is arguably the region's benchmark style. 2018 is set to go down amongst the greats, a seamless and thrilling union of fragrance, energy, polish and poise, sealed with the ultimate line and length. Breathtaking.”- Tyson Stelzer.
"96+ Points. Beautiful. Memorable. Wonderful. The texture grabs you. The faintest grip, the sheath of feathery tannins at play. Scents of cassis, bay leaf, faint eucalyptus and mint, sandalwood and sweet earth. Pure flavours, come hither fruitiness, but compact, inward, extraordinarily long in character too. A cool expression, tense and taut, luxurious too, has flow, but all compact and restrained. It tastes delicious, generally, though it’s the feel, the stretch, the sense of pedigree and detail that gets you. Stellar release. And I reckon more better to come. Tasted: JUL20 13.5% alc. $120 Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2040" - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.
"96 Points. 55% cabernet sauvignon, 28% merlot, 12% malbec, 5% petit verdot. Essence of blackcurrant with a boysenberried freshness, almost into forest berry territory, with polished cedar wood oak and drifts of fragrant herbs. Pure, complete, svelte; all these words apply. Has a long run ahead of it. $120. 13.5% alc. Drink by: 2040. Screwcap" - Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au.
Yarra Yering is one of the true treasures of Australian wine and a winery that led the resurgence of Yarra Valley wine, under the guidance of the late Dr Bailey Carrodus back in 1969. Carrodus named his vineyard Yarra Yering and in 1973 produced the first vintage of the now legendary Dry Red Wine No 1 & 2.
Today winemaking at Yarra Yering is overseen by the talented Sarah Crowe (Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker Of The Year 2017), with the wines continuing to be made in the Carrodus built winery with its purpose built equipment; small batch fermentation and hand pressing in small basket presses.
