Yarra Yering Dry Red No 2 is Yarra Yering's Shiraz-based blend, with inspiration drawn from the reds of France's Rhone Valley. This 2018 Yarra Yering Dry Red No 2 is another beautifully perfumed and complex wine, the shiraz is co-fermented with tiny volumes of viognier and marsanne for vibrancy.
The result is an incredibly vibrant, fragrant and wonderfully complex wine; the plum fruits come in all colours dialling up the flavour interest. There is cigar box and cardamom spice lending intrigue. Firm tannins ably support the fruit and texture drive the palate. A superb No 2 release from Yarra Yering that is well deserving of the high praise it has already received.
"96 Points. Deep red colour with a good purple tinge, and a very attractive range of aromas, with less spice and more oak than the Underhill, black fruits, tar and graphite, black olive/tapenade and a trace of black pepper. It's full-bodied, intensely-focused and piercing, with elegance as well as drive. A smart wine, highly nuanced as usual and really excellent." - Huon Hooke, The Real Review, July 2020.
"95 Points. Shiraz 95%, mataro 3%, viognier 1%, marsanne 1%. Impeccable form. There's a sweetness to the fruit and a savouriness to the finish, redcurrant and twists of herbs, with floral overtones and oak as garnish. It's smooth-skinned but not syrupy; it's a wine in complete control. Not a question mark in sight. $120. 13.5% alc. Drink by 2036. Screwcap" - Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au.
Yarra Yering is one of the true treasures of Australian wine and a winery that led the resurgence of Yarra Valley wine, under the guidance of the late Dr Bailey Carrodus back in 1969. Carrodus named his vineyard Yarra Yering and in 1973 produced the first vintage of the now legendary Dry Red Wine No 1 & 2.
Today winemaking at Yarra Yering is overseen by the talented Sarah Crowe (Halliday Wine Companion Winemaker Of The Year 2017), with the wines continuing to be made in the Carrodus built winery with its purpose built equipment; small batch fermentation and hand pressing in small basket presses.
