A long time former winemaker at Tyrrell's, Andrew Thomas has long been regarded as one of the Hunter Valley's leading winemakers. With a focus on the region's hero varietals; Semillon and Shiraz, Thomas regularly delivers highly acclaimed benchmark examples.
The 2021 Thomas Sweetwater Shiraz is produced from the highly praised vineyard at Sweetwater Ridge in the northern part of the Lower Hunter Valley. Only the very best barrels were selected for this label with a selection of fruit trickling down to the Synergy and Two of a Kind bottlings. This is flush with dark, broody fruits, savoury spices and woodsy earth. Well-pitched acidity and supporting tannins provide the frame for beautiful mid-palate weight, fleshy dark fruits, baking spice richness and a dense but fine-boned presence. Full of complexity and impact and once again impressive value.
“94 Points. Any red wine of the 2021 vintage is by definition better than any offering from ’20, it with no more than a handful of Hunter Valley shiraz wines that dared to make the point. This is a wine with a 20+ year future, firm, earthy black fruits not requiring a 'thank god' finish. Screw cap. 14.2% alc. Drink: 2022 - 2044. Special Value"- James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2024.
