96 Points - Philip Rich
Rob Hall was a winemaker at the esteemed Mount Mary vineyard for over 10 vintages, and during that time it's safe to assume he gained great insight into how to make top class Yarra Valley wine. After departing Mount Mary, Rob Hall launched his eponymous label, with a focus on making Yarra Valley varietals to be enjoyed in their youth at a very reasonable price point.
Inspired by the great Cabernets that made the Yarra Valley famous, this 2023 Rob Hall Cabernets is crafted from Cabernet and Merlot, with the grapes picked slightly riper to maximise drinkability. Offering lovely aromas of dark red fruit, chocolate notes and subtle spice, this is a lovely, medium-bodied Yarra Valley red wine with plenty of flavour, silky tannin while retaining freshness.
"96 Points. A blend of 62/32/6% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/ malbec. Rob knows a thing or two about cabernet, most likely, I'm guessing, from his days at Mount Mary. A brilliant, crimson purple, this fragrant wine leaps out of the glass with its bouquet of cassis, liqueur cherries, cedar, violets and just a soupçon of fresh tomato leaf. Medium bodied, this juicy-fruited wine is impeccably balanced with silky, persistent tannins that resonate throughout. If this was a pinot, it would be double the price. $30. 13% alc. Drink: 2024 - 2032. Screwcap."- Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion 2025.
