"Bloody beautiful." - Gary Walsh.

Widely considered one of Australia's leading Cabernet makers, Cullen of Margaret River continue to produce breath-taking examples of Cabernet across various price point.

Sometime referred to as the junior Diana Madeline, the 2021 Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is made from Cabernet Sauvignon from grapes coming from the Cullen's ‘old block’ cabernet sauvignon, planted 50 years ago in 1971.

A blend of 78% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 2% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot, this 2021 Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is another impressive example from Vanya Cullen and her team. It displays densely flavoured ripe dark fruits complemented by subtle fine-grained tannins; top-class Margaret River Cabernet at a sensational price.

"94+ Points. Cullen does modest alcohol, flavour, and hazelnut chew so well. No overt acidity, so calm and thick without heaviness. In short, wines that *feel* right. Blackberry, boysenberry, hazelnut, a violet perfume, with earthiness below. Medium-bodied, thick and nutty with a praline richness, melting smudgy tannin offering grip and excellent texture, earth and gravel, almond paste, fresh acidity with an amaro dried herb edge, and a perfumed finish offering loads of lush tannin, slate, and red berry acidity. Feels like a wine made in the vineyard, which is as it should be. Bloody beautiful. Tasted: Mar22 13% alc. $45 Screwcap Drink: 2023 - 2030+" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.

A pioneer of Margaret River wine, Cullen always produce long-lived wines of highly individual style from their mature estate vineyards. The philosophy of Cullen Wines is to search for the best quality expression of the vineyard in the wine. The maritime climate, rocky soils, dry farming and biodynamic practices all help to create individual and diverse wine styles which are unique to Cullen.

The maritime climate of Margaret River allows a near perfect environment in which to grow the finest quality grapes. The rocky soils produce low yielding intensely flavoured grapes and the flavour of these grapes is what creates the fabric for the wine style at Cullen.

The vines are dry farmed, helping to ensure maximum fruit quality, and all pruning and harvesting are done by hand with great care. Quality is paramount and when the hand-harvested grapes arrive at the winery from the vineyard, they are sorted again to ensure that only the best goes into the bottle.

Biodynamic practices and minimal intervention apply to both vineyard and winery with all wines being naturally fermented.

As time passes, a greater understanding of the vineyard and grapes is gained and this makes possible the creation of a more individual wine style.
