98 Points - James Halliday
One of Australia's true winemaking treasures, Mount Mary was a key driver in the rebirth of the Yarra Valley in the early 1970's after nearly 50 years without viticultural activity. Today, in the words of James Halliday, "its star shines brighter than that of any of the 174 wineries in the valley".
The 2019 Mount Mary Quintet is another wonderful example of the classic Bordeaux-style red blend that Mount Mary have been championing for decades. Already attracting plenty of high praise from some of Australia's most respected wine voices, this is likely to sell out fast.
“98 Points. 44/30/16/5/5% Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot; its superb colour promises all that is delivered by this utterly glorious wine, every detail perfect. Cassis, blackcurrant, black olive, bay leaf and cedar rest on a cushion of polished tannins, its harmony and balance faultless. 13% alc; cork, drink to 2041.”- James Halliday, Weekend Australian, May 2021.
“98 Points. A quintet of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc and 5% each of Malbec and Petit Verdot, all in harmony. Heady aromatics, the fruit pristine and lightly spiced. But it's the medium-bodied palate that really woos: focused and seamless with superfine yet detailed tannins. Of course it has the beauty and charm of youth but age will send this to another level. Did I mention elegance? Tick.”- Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion 2022.
"97 Points. Cabernet Sauvignon 44%, Merlot 30%, Cabernet Franc 16%, Malbec 5%, Petit Verdot 5%. It’s no news flash, but for me, this is one of the greatest wines produced in Australia, if not the world. My word. Head-spinning perfume, pencils and spice, rich deep dark berry flavour, aniseed and almond paste. Medium-bodied, density delivered with effortless elegance, delicious nutty chew to its carpet of ripe tannin, a mix of red and black fruits, and an exotic character to a finish of outstanding length. Incredible. Tasted: Aug21 13% alc. $165 Cork Drink: 2021 - 2042+"- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
