The name Penley Estate comes from the amalgamation of two pioneering South Australian wine families; the Penfolds and Tolleys. Long regarded as one of Coonawarra's leading wineries, Penley Estate has undergone a re-birth of sorts in recent years under the skilled, modern winemaking of Kate Goodman.
The 2021 Penley Tolmer Cabernet Sauvignon is an impressive, modern style of Coonawarra Cabernet with vibrant, lifted aromas of boysenberry, blood plums and bay leaf. The palate is juicy and ultra approachable, with layers of cassis, forest fruit, dark chocolate and a subtle touch of tannin. A Cabernet of wide appeal, this offers excellent value drinking at this limited time price (RRP $30).
"96 Points. Matured in French oak (20% new) for 12 months. Prepare to get carried away on a Ribena cloud as boysenberries float on by and dark cherry and beetroot juice waver underneath you. The purity of fruit is remarkable with judicious oak cradling in support. Soft licorice, glittering black sandy tannins, kombu and a slurp to the up-tempo acidity.
