95 Points - Ray Jordan
As a pioneer of Western Australia's Margaret River wine region, Cape Mentelle consistently produce one of Australia's leading Chardonnays. The 2023 Cape Mentelle Chardonnay is another stunning rendition; delivering a powerful, intensely flavoured and perfectly balanced Margaret River Chardonnay.
Built around the classic local Margaret River Gingin clone, the 2023 Cape Mentelle Chardonnay is a multilayered and complex Chardonnay drawing upon an additional array of clones and multiple microclimates within Cape Mentelle's sites. A product of a drier and warmer vintage, this is a generously weighted Chardonnay with great presence; offering lemon curd, yellow peach tart, almond flakes and pink grapefruits notes, finishing with the texture and complexity that are hallmarks of Cape Mentelle.
"95 Points. This is a wine that captures the precision and elegance of a vintage that produced wines combining delicacy with power. Whole bunch pressing and wild fermentation, followed by eight months in French oak barriques, have contributed to a complex and layered palate. On the nose, there are lively, slightly lemon-scented, minerally, lemon curd characters. The palate shows deep intensity, with oak and fruit sitting neatly together and a slightly saline finish, complemented by a subtle savoriness. An impressive wine. "95 Points. Gee this is good. It's moreish and savoury, with plenty of flavour yet a certain level of restraint as well. The spicy oak lightly coats the lemon and grapefruit, there's some ginger tea, and lemon curd and clotted cream lees add texture across the palate. Fine acidity ensures a fresh finish and gets you ready for the next sip. 13.4% alc, Drink 2025-2033"- Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
