David Powell established the iconic Torbreck in 1994 by offering to nurse back to health a number of neglected old vines he had found when he was working for Rockford.
This share-crop arrangement allowed Powell to make his first wine under the Torbreck label which was named after a forest in Scotland where he had worked as a lumberjack. The Torbreck wines are based on the classic Barossa varieties of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and also small quantities of Roussanne, Marsanne & Viognier.
Torbreck has an enviable collection of growers around the Barossa & Eden Valleys with vines aged from 10 years old (which would go into Woodcutters Shiraz) to 160 years old (The Run Rig). The house style at Torbreck is a seamless balance of richness and finesse, the wines are always fresh and vibrant with underlying power and drive.
